Recently, Knowing Buddha Organization was notified that Kikkerland Inc., the world-famous company which designs, produces, and globally distributes creative, playful, and quirky gifts, and gadgets misuse the Buddha symbol which was found as “ Buddha Mug ”, and is the collaborative design of Kikkerland Inc. and Hector Serrano Studio, also the internationally renowned design studio. This incident is very inappropriate and heartbreak since Buddha is the Father of Buddhists and is also the prophet of Buddhism and image of such a highly noble person should not be using as just a decorative or kitchenware thing.

Therefore, we sent a letter to both companies, informing them that the right understanding and knowledge of the Buddha symbol is for paying respect and as a remembrance of his virtues and teachings, not for merchandise and decorative objects purposes. Besides, the offensive product could be the result of unappropriated imitation and misconception of Buddha and will misguide people to perceive him in a wrong way without having to pay respect to.

After they received our letters, Mr. Hector Serrano, Founder of Hector Serrano Studio, and the designer, quickly responded that he did not mean to offend or disrespect Buddha and promptly spoke to the co-company, Mr. Jan Van De Lande, CEO of Kikkerland Inc. The CEO expresses his deep regret for the unintentionally disrespecting action and will immediately remove the offensive product image from the website and other online channels. Also, he promises that no more offensive products will be sold and designed in the future as from the following replied message.

“ At Kikkerland, we have the utmost respect for Lord Buddha, and we acknowledge that the design and manufacture of the Buddha mug was a regrettable mistake on our part. We want to assure you that we take this matter seriously and have taken immediate action to rectify the situation.
I am pleased to inform you that we have taken the Buddha mug out of our collection, and we will no longer produce or distribute any similar items in the future. We will not show this item on our website anymore and we will close out our remaining stock. We understand the importance of respecting religious and cultural symbols, and we are committed to avoiding such mistakes in our product designs.”

This is a very good example of companies doing business with a sense of respect for all religions, caring for other people and willingness to listen and correct for what is wrong. This correction will also be an example for other businesses that still misuse the Buddha symbol for decoration, merchandise, and decorative objects.

สืบเนื่องจากเมื่อไม่นานมานี้องค์กรโนอิ้งบุดด้าได้รับแจ้งจากชาวพุทธผู้ไม่นิ่งดูดายว่ามีการปฏิบัติที่ไม่เหมาะสมต่อพระสัญลักษณ์ของพระพุทธเจ้า โดยบริษัท Kikkerland Inc. บริษัทที่โด่งดังระดับโลกซึ่งออกแบบ ผลิต และจัดจำหน่ายของขวัญ อุปกรณ์ เครื่องมือและแกดเจ็ตที่มีดีไซน์สนุกสนาน เก๋ ทันสมัย และสร้างสรรค์ มีจำหน่ายทั้งหน้าร้านในนิวยอร์ก อัมสเตอร์ดัม ทั้งทางออนไลน์ และมีตัวแทนจำหน่ายอยู่มากมายทั่วโลก โดยสินค้าที่นำพระสัญลักษณ์มาใช้คือ แก้วกาแฟ โดยถูกเรียกชื่อว่า บุดด้ามัค ซึ่งเป็นสินค้าที่ร่วมออกแบบกับบริษัท Hector Serrano Studio บริษัทออกแบบชื่อดังระดับโลกเช่นกัน

การนำพระสัญลักษณ์มาออกแบบเป็นแก้วกาแฟดังที่ทั้งสองบริษัททำร่วมกันนั้น เป็นการไม่เหมาะสมอย่างยิ่งเพราะจะทำให้เกิดความเข้าใจผิด คิดว่าสัญลักษณ์ของพระพุทธองค์นั้นสามารถนำมาเป็นของใช้และของประดับตกแต่งได้ โดยมิจำเป็นต้องให้ความเคารพแต่อย่างใด องค์กรจึงได้ส่งจดหมายถึงบริษัททั้งสองแห่ง เพื่อให้ความรู้ความเข้าใจที่ถูกต้องว่า พระพุทธเจ้าเป็นพุทธบิดาและเป็นพระศาสดาของพุทธศาสนิกชน พระพุทธรูปหรือพระพุทธสัญลักษณ์เป็นสิ่งที่สื่อถึงพระพุทธองค์เพื่อน้อมรำลึกถึงพระคุณและพระธรรมคำสั่งสอน มิใช่มีไว้เพื่อเป็นของใช้หรือเพื่อเป็นของประดับตกแต่งภายในบ้าน และการใช้พระสัญลักษณ์มาออกแบบสินค้าเช่นที่ทั้งสองบริษัทได้ทำนี้ อาจก่อให้เกิดความเข้าใจผิดและส่งต่อการลอกเลียนแบบ ซึ่งอาจทำให้ผู้อื่นนำพระสัญลักษณ์ของพระพุทธเจ้ามาใช้ในงานออกแบบการตกแต่งและเพื่อการค้าเพิ่มขึ้นอีกได้

เป็นที่น่าชื่นชมว่า เมื่อได้รับจดหมายจากองค์กร Mr. Jan Van De Lande, CEO of Kikkerland Inc. and Mr. Hector Serrano, Founder of Hector Serrano Studio ได้แสดงความเสียใจอย่างยิ่งต่อการกระทำเนื่องจากความไม่รู้ของตน พวกเขากล่าวว่า เขาเคารพพระพุทธองค์เช่นกัน และไม่ได้ตั้งใจลบหลู่ดูหมิ่นพระพุทธเจ้า และจะทำการลบรูปภาพสินค้าลบหลู่ออกจากเว็บไซต์และช่องทางออนไลน์อื่นๆทันที ดังเช่นที่ทาง KBO ได้ร้องขอไป รวมทั้งยังให้สัญญาว่าจะไม่มีการผลิต จัดจำหน่าย และออกแบบสินค้าลบหลู่หรือใกล้เคียงอีกในอนาคต ดังข้อความในจดหมายตอบกลับมาดังนี้

นับเป็นอีกหนึ่งตัวอย่างของการดำเนินธุรกิจบนพื้นฐานของจิตสำนึกที่ดีงาม ให้ความเคารพกับทุกศาสนา ให้เกียรติเปิดใจรับฟังผู้อื่น และพร้อมแก้ไขในสิ่งที่ผิด กรณีนี้ก็จะเป็นตัวอย่างที่ดีให้กับธุรกิจหรือบริษัทอื่นในการดำเนินธุรกิจบนพื้นฐานของความดี ให้ความเคารพศาสนาอื่น ด้วยการไม่นำพระพุทธสัญลักษณ์มาใช้ในทางที่ผิด เป็นเครื่องใช้และของประดับตกแต่งภายในบ้าน ซึ่งเป็นการลบหลู่พระพุทธองค์ และลดทอนคุณค่าของพระสัญลักษณ์ รวมทั้งยังเป็นการสร้างกรรมให้กับตัวของผู้กระทำเองอีกด้วย
